At All Things Cake in Tulsa, we love when a cake design tells a story. This custom bank vault cake for a 50th birthday celebration was one of those projects that was just plain fun from start to finish.
The cake was created as a surprise for the CEO of First Oklahoma Bank in Jenks, Oklahoma, and the client and I worked together to design something playful that tied into his profession.
The result? A dramatic bank vault cake bursting open with money and gold coins spilling out everywhere.
A 50th Birthday Cake Designed to Make an Impression
This cake was built as a 9-inch round, four-layer cake designed to serve approximately 40 guests, making it the perfect centerpiece for a milestone birthday celebration.
The design was meant to feel like a bank vault had just exploded open, revealing piles of cash and gold coins inside.
Money and coins spilled from the open vault door and cascaded down the cake, while even more coins and bills were piled high on top of the cake to create a dramatic, over-the-top effect.
To finish the design, we added festive star toppers and a bold gold “50” topper to celebrate the birthday milestone.
How the Bank Vault Cake Was Created
Designs like this require quite a bit of planning and preparation before the cake is even assembled.
The vault doors, hinges, and hardware elements were made in advance so they could dry and hold their shape properly once attached to the cake. This allows the details to look sturdy and realistic.
The gold coins were created from small fondant rounds and hand-painted with edible gold paint to give them a metallic finish.
For the cash spilling out of the vault, we used play money printed on edible paper, which allowed the design to look authentic while remaining completely food-safe.
The finishing touches included:
- Fondant star toppers
- A fondant number 50 topper painted gold
- Edible gold coins
- Edible printed currency
- Custom vault door details and hardware
All of these elements combined to bring the bank vault concept to life.
