Lights, camera, cake! Transforming a birthday celebration into a red-carpet affair calls for a show-stopping cake, and what better theme than Hollywood itself? In this post, we’re sharing a behind-the-scenes look at creating this glamorous Hollywood-themed birthday cake, featuring edible popcorn, a vibrant red carpet, and gold-star glitz.
Step 1: Planning the Design
Before we began, we sketched out the vision for the cake. The main elements we wanted to include were:
- A striped popcorn bucket as the focal point.
- A bold red carpet cascading down the cake.
- Gold and silver stars to add sparkle.
- Hollywood-themed props like a clapperboard and film reel.
The color palette was classic Hollywood: red, white, black, gold, and silver. Each tier was designed to represent a piece of the Hollywood experience.
Step 2: Baking the Cake
We baked multiple tiers to create the structure for the cake. For this design, we used:
- A 10-inch round cake for the base tier.
- Four 6-inch round cakes for the popcorn bucket, which were carved into shape.
The cakes were layered with vanilla-flavored American buttercream, providing a smooth and delicious canvas for the final decorations. Any cake flavor can be used to suit the recipient’s preference.
Step 3: Building the Base
The entire cake was iced in smooth vanilla-flavored American buttercream to provide a flawless canvas for the design. The bottom tier was covered in white buttercream to serve as a neutral backdrop for the red carpet and decorative stars. The red fondant was carefully cut into a wide strip and placed down the center of the tier, draping it over the edge to mimic a real carpet. Gold sugar pearls were added along the edges of the carpet for an elegant touch.
Step 4: Creating the Popcorn Bucket
The top tier was designed to look like a popcorn bucket:
- Carving the Shape: Four layers of 6-inch round cakes were stacked and carved into the iconic tapered shape of a popcorn bucket.
- Striping the Bucket: We alternated red and white fondant strips around the sides of the cake to recreate the iconic popcorn bucket look.
- Adding the Popcorn: The “popcorn” was made using mini marshmallows, partially cut and shaped to mimic popped kernels. Each piece was dusted with yellow petal dust for a realistic buttery appearance, then arranged on top of the cake.
Step 5: Adding Hollywood Props
We handcrafted the Hollywood-themed decorations using edible materials:
- Film Reel: Made from black fondant, rolled into a circle, and detailed with silver edible paint.
- Clapperboard: A small rectangle of black fondant with white fondant details to mimic the iconic movie clapper.
- Stars: Gold and silver fondant stars were cut and attached to floral wires to give them height and movement, creating a sparkling backdrop for the popcorn bucket.
Step 6: Final Touches
To complete the cake, we:
- Added a custom “Happy Birthday” topper in black and gold.
- Scattered additional fondant stars and edible popcorn around the base tier.
- Brushed edible glitter over the cake for an extra dose of Hollywood glam.
Tips for Success
- Time Management: Give yourself plenty of time to craft the details, especially the popcorn and props.
- Stability: Use dowels to ensure the cake tiers stay stable, especially when transporting.
- Creativity: Don’t be afraid to play around with the design! Each Hollywood-themed cake can have its own unique spin.

Bonus: Matching Cupcakes for Extra Servings
For larger parties, consider adding coordinating cupcakes to match the Hollywood theme. These cupcakes were designed to look like mini popcorn buckets, featuring striped cupcake wrappers filled with marshmallows dusted in yellow petal dust to resemble buttery popcorn. Not only do they add a fun, whimsical touch to the dessert table, but they also provide additional servings to keep all your guests satisfied.
A Cake Fit for the Stars
This Hollywood-themed birthday cake is sure to be the star of any celebration. Whether it’s for a film enthusiast or someone who loves a bit of glamour, this design combines creativity and craftsmanship for a truly unforgettable centerpiece. Lights, camera, deliciousness!
